There are several things to consider when buying a toy kitchen. Listed below are five.

Your child - Yes, your child. They have just begun to walk and are now pulling pots and pans out of the cupboard. That is a good sign that they are ready for a toy kitchen. But, is your child tall enough to reach the different parts of the unit you have in mind? Some of the units are four foot high. Your child may not yet be able to reach the top cupboards. Your choices at this point are: to wait for your child to grow before making the purchase, buy a smaller toddler kitchen, or just let your child grow into it.

Your budget - There are pretend kitchens available at various price points. Your average new kitchen set costs between $100 to $200. Plastic units are not necessarily less expensive than those made from wood. Then again, you may want to pay a little extra for a very nice, furniture quality, wooden play kitchen. Another choice is a multiple appliance pretend kitchen play set. These are probably the most fun, but they are not the cheapest. For a less expensive alternative, look for either a used play kitchen set. Or, buy a small portable model. Your child will have fun with the any style of toy kitchen no matter what the price point.

Longevity - How long do you plan to keep it? Are you going to move soon and would rather have something to throw out instead of move? Is the toy kitchen going to be passed on from sibling to sibling, so that you will get more than six years of play out of it? Would you like your future grandchildren to play with it? The longer you intend to keep it, the more you need to look at durability. A solid wood play kitchen is a good bet for durability.

Location - Where are you going to put the toy kitchen? Do you have enough space? Is there space along the wall, or only in the middle of the room? Will it match the room decor? All things to consider when choosing. Make sure you decide on where you want to put it and check the dimensions before you buy.

Storage Space - Play kitchens beget play kitchen toys. Different models have varying storage space. Typically, storage can be found inside the refrigerators, ovens and under the sinks. Be aware that you will want the storage space.
