And your kids will love you even more for taking the time to personalize it. You could paint their names on the side or put stickers of their favorite trains on it too.
Since you're building it, you can stay simple with a flat surface, or you can go fancy and include mountains, hills, trees, buildings, and little people. It'll be like the kid's version of the model railroad.
