None of us really want to grow up - we're forced to do that by society. Ask any man, young or old, if he'd rather go back to his childhood days and get back to playing toy soldiers with his friends and he'll heartily agree. The surprising thing about most airsoft rifles is that they're actually quite heavy and very well built. They're designed to be an almost exact copy of the original firearm in every possible way - which in turn gives you an idea of what it would be like to handle the real thing. Most current airsoft rifles fire a 6mm bb but there are some newer variants now supporting an 8mm bb - although these are still quite rare. These bbs are available in light, medium and heavyweight grades to suit all firing and plinking styles. You can also get paintball and luminous bbs if you really want to test your rifle out.
There are several basic types of airsoft gun available. They are as follows:
Spring Powered
These are normally some of the most powerful airsoft rifles available often sporting speeds of up to 300 feet per second. The major flaw with this type of rifle is that you need to arm or cock it before each shot. This means they're a single shot rifle even though they're a replica of a fully automatic assault rifle.
Gas Powered
These are the next step up from spring powered guns. Gas airsoft guns are also highly portable and reasonably powerful. Available in fully automatic modes they can deplete the gas "charge" stored in the gun very quickly. This can involve carrying around replacement tins of compressed gas for the rifle or possibly even carrying a recharging pump around with you.
Electric Airsoft
These are also known as AER (Automatic Electric Rifles)and are the most popular type of airsoft rifle because for many reasons. For example they're highly portable, battery powered, powerful, accurate and reliable. Many AER models can give 2 - 3 years of flawless operation with the most basic of maintenance but tend to be the most expensive type of airsoft gun available.
